Another Firefox Tweak

Well, I found another firefox tweak. Just thought I post it here for future reference. Copy this code into your user.js file and restart the browser.

/* Do not remove the @namespace line--it's required for correct functioning */
/* Set default namespace to XUL */
@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul");

/* Shell security fix */
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.external.shell", false);

/* Enable=true Disable=false pipelining */
user_pref("network.http.pipelining", true);
user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);
user_pref("network.http.pipelining.maxrequests", 4);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 24);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", ;
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4);
user_pref("signed.applets.codebase_principal_support", true);

/* Disabling IPv6 seems to significantly increase site loading speeds */
user_pref("network.dns.disableIPv6", true);

/* Last value in milliseconds (default is 1200 for Firefox | 250 for Mozilla) */
user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 1000);

user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 1000000);

/* Turn on timer-based reflow management */
user_pref("content.notify.ontimer", true);

/* Sets the allowed time between reflows in microseconds */
user_pref("content.notify.interval", 100);

/* Set the number of reflows to do before waiting for the rest of the page to arrive */
user_pref("content.notify.backoffcount", 200);

/* Speed restoring Mozilla Firefox after it has been minimized for several hours */
user_pref("config.trim_on_minimize", "false");

Hide Drives

Sometimes you may want to hide your personal files or folder from other people. You can either encrypt or hide the files or folder. Instead of doing so, why don't you hide the entire drive from the system. Here's how you can do it.

Back up your registry before you start!

1. Open Regedit.

2. Navigate to one of these strings:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersionPolicies\Explorer - this only changes the settings for the current logged in user

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersionPolicies\Explorer - this changes the settings for all users on the machine. You may have to create the key folder "Explorer" manually.

3. In the Explorer key folder, create a new DWORD value by right-clicking Explorer, then choosing New DWORD value. Name the value "NoDrives" (without the quotes). This value defines local and network drive visibility for each logical drive on the computer. All drives will be visible as long as this value's data is set to 0.

4. Following the table below, enter the decimal number corresponding to the drive(s) you want to hide as NoDrives value data. When you right-click on NoDrives and choose Modify, make sure you select Decimal base, not Hexadecimal.

Drive Number to hide
A: 1
B: 2
C: 4
D: 8
E: 16
F: 32
G: 64
H: 128
I: 256
J: 512
K: 1024
L: 2048
M: 4096
N: 8192
O: 16384
P: 32768
Q: 65536
R: 131072
S: 262144
T: 524288
U: 1048576
V: 2097152
W: 4194304
X: 8388608
Y: 16777216
Z: 33554432
All drives 67108863

If you want to hide more than one drive, you simply add the drive amounts together for a combined total.

For example, to hide the D:/ and T:/ drives, add the decimal value for the D:/ drive to the decimal value to the T:/ drive.

8 (D) + 524288 (T) = 524296

To disable all of your visible drives, set the value to 67108863.

You must reboot your PC to see your changes.

Firefox Tweak

The tweaks here can make your Firefox browser considerably faster. Please make sure you have the latest Firefox browser installed for the tweak to work properly.

Basic.

Go to "about:config" from address bar.

Enabling pipelining it will make several requests to websites at once, speeds up page loading. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

Set "network.dns.disableIPv6" to "true"

Add a new field by right-clicking anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Click Save and restart Firefox.

Bootable Live Windows CD

Finally I managed to create a bootable live Windows cd similar to what Linux Knoppix and other distro can offer. It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for PC maintenance tasks and data recovery. Thanks to BartPE and UBCD for windows.

Basic steps for securing PC

The few simple steps outlined below can provide a good measure of security for your computer in very little time without even spending anything.

1. Use anti-virus program
This is a must for every computer and make sure you update the virus definition file regularly. My favourite one is AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition from grisoft.

2. Install a personal firewall
Personal firewall can provide some degree of protection to your computer since all incoming and outging traffic are being monitored. Try installing one from ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

3. Spyware removal tool
I would recommend Ad-aware personal SE from Lavasoft as your anti-spyware scanner. For double protection, you can even install SpywareBlaster.

4. Windows update
To combat worms and Windows vulnerabilities, make sure all necessary security patches are installed. Windows vulnerabilities are constantly being discovered. Visit the Windows Update Center weekly to ensure you have all the critical patches.

5. Turn Off File-Sharing
File sharing would allow you to share your files across network. However, this ability to share files can be used to infect your computer with a virus or for a hacker to look at the files on your computer. So, unless you really need this ability, make sure you turn off file-sharing.
Turn off file sharing in Windows 98
Turn off file sharing in Windows XP

6. E-mails attachments
Use care when reading e-mail with attachments. NEVER open attachment from an unknown sender with file types that are often virus carriers. These include EXE, COM, PIF, SCR, VBS, SHS, CHM and BAT file types. The safest approach is to immediately delete e-mail from unknown sources, without opening the email. Consider using secondary e-mail address (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) when registering or subscribing anything from the web.

7. Downloding and installing programs
Before you download and install any programs especially freeware, make sure the program comes from a legitimate source. Learn as much about the program and never download software from un-trusted sites.

8. Consider switching your browser
There are quite a significant number of vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. You can possibly reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser. Try using firefox, mozilla or opera for a change.
